Aquascape Artist of the Year: The Story Behind the Trophy That Changed Everything
TL;DR — Why This Matters
We didn't apply. We didn't even know we were being considered. But one unforgettable project changed everything. This is the real story of how we became Artist of the Year — and what it means today.
In 2013, we were named Artist of the Year by Aquascape— the highest honor in the world of water feature artistry.
But we didn't apply. We didn't submit. We didn't even know we were being considered.
A vendor visited one of our builds, had their mind blown, and told someone at Aquascape. That person dug through our portfolio — and what they found spoke for itself.
We had spent years in the trenches: working shoulder to shoulder with the best in the business, showing up at every event, donating time, pouring in blood, sweat, and artistry. And suddenly… the right person saw the right project at the right time.
Then they handed us the award.
I stood on stage in total disbelief. No speech. No prep. Just raw gratitude and shock.
This article tells the real story of how it happened — and what it really takes to win Artist of the Year.
Because this isn't just an award. It's the industry's loudest statement:
"This is what true aquatic art looks like."
I sat down with Greg Wittstock at Aquascape during a sandbox build and captured his thoughts on what it really means to win Artist of the Year — and how our team elevated the bar. (Watch the video below.)
"All of us are striving to be better artists with our work... what's fun for me is to see how people who grew up learning our methods have evolved them in their own ways. Your team elevated the bar to another level." — Greg W.
What Is Aquascape's Artist of the Year?
The Artist of the Year award is Aquascape's highest honor — given to one builder each year whose work redefines naturalistic water feature design.
If you've never heard of Artist of the Year, there's a reason.
It's not a marketing stunt. It's not a local trophy.
It's a title given by Aquascape — the world leader in water feature technology and naturalistic design — and it only means something to the people who've spent their entire lives working to become one of the world's most renowned aquatic artists.
Each year, after Aquascape's Pondemonium event, they name one Artist of the Year.
Since 2011, there have only been 14 Artists of the Year.
Winning isn't about volume. It's not about applying or campaigning. In fact, most of the time, you don't even know you're being considered.
Consider it the Olympics of water feature artistry.
You can work all day, every day, all year, year after year — training with the best, putting your name in the hat (or trying to get your name put in the hat), doing the work that it takes — only to get up on stage and realize that you're against a dozen other people who have done exactly the same thing and worked just as hard.
Doing all the right things is no guarantee.
It's like getting struck by lightning. It's that hard to win.
Artist of the Year is someone whose work consistently represents all of the proper methodologies and styles to recreate naturalistic water features.
"A good builder can build a water feature that looks nice, that holds water, that functions properly.
Artist of the Year builds a water feature that looks like there was a water feature and someone built their house next to it — instead of someone who built a water feature next to their house."
It's not a job. It's a statement.
If you're wondering whether your artist matters…
If you're wondering whether you should just hire a pond guy…
Ask yourself:
Would you hire a random sculptor? Or would you hire Michelangelo?
That's what this story is about.
What Project Won Us Artist of the Year in 2013?
The Seiler project wasn't just big — it was breathtaking. A vendor saw it, and that one build changed everything.
A Small Pond with Big Potential
I got a call from Jerry. He had a small pond — maybe six by eight feet — with some fish in it, and it was nothing but problems. Algae. Water loss. Fish issues. But more than that, I could just tell how passionate he was about it. He loved the idea of it. He just hadn't experienced what it could truly be.
Trust, Time, and Evolution
At first, we applied band-aids, troubleshooting & earning his trust. Jerry's the kind of guy who can afford what he wants — but he didn't know what he didn't know. Over time, we began talking about options. I showed him what we were capable of.
We were past our "rock pile" stage by then. This was after years of mastering the craft — placing boulders with intention, designing fish caves, blending elevation and flow like real nature does. Jerry had seen our evolution, and he trusted it.
I gave him three rebuild options, each one more ambitious than the last. The most expensive? About $80,000 at the time. Today, that same project would cost over $250,000. I even drew it out for him — a sketch showing how the water feature would wrap against his house. I still have that drawing.
He looked at all three and said, "Yeah… let's do it."
Every Detail Mattered
How I Found Out We Won Artist of the Year
What Made the Seiler Project World-Class?
Every stone, every detail, every line of sight — all of it was intentional. It wasn't just a pond; it was a living sculpture.
We didn't skip anything:
- Wetland filtration
- Negative edge
- Fish caves large enough for full-grown koi
- Cantilevered boulders
- Proper circulation
- Full landscape lighting
- Ground covers, texture layers, views from every angle
If I had to pick one thing that makes this project iconic?
Comprehensive awesomeness.
It wasn't one detail. It was everything we'd learned in our careers up to that point — all stacked into one perfect build. Landscaping. Stone placement. Lighting. Engineering. It was all there, and it was all dialed in.
And yeah — it changed how I build.
How The Industry Responded To Our AOTY Win
Aquascape Opportunities
Greg gave us access to all kinds of opportunities after the win. The Artist of the Year trips became a tradition. It's something he wants people in the industry to aspire to, not just admire.
Since then, we've:
- Worked on projects in Colombia and South America
- Traveled to Australia with the AOTY group
- Been to Africa multiple times with the Aquascape Foundation
- Regularly speak at Pondemonium and sit on AOTY panels
- Get invited to sandbox builds and special content features
Do Clients Understand What Artist of the Year Means?
Most don't — and that's okay. We let our work speak louder than the trophy ever could.
Truthfully, clients don't know what Artist of the Year means.
If I tell a prospect we won it, it doesn't seem to register. I might as well quote a line from the dictionary. We don't lead with it. We don't brag. We just do the work.
Maybe that's on us. Maybe we should promote it more. But so far, it's always been more about our content, our portfolio, and our conversations than the title.
Why Artist Of The Year Matters In The Pond Industry
Were There Other Benefits To Winning "Aquascape Artist Of The Year?"
Only one — a writing invitation from POND Trade Magazine. We're not in it for the applause.
Outside of Aquascape, the only real recognition came from POND Trade Magazine.
The editor saw our work, saw us teach, and invited me to write. That opened up another platform — a way to educate through words, not just video.
That's about it.
We're not chasing fame.
We just build, teach, and stay loyal to the ones who helped us grow.
How Winning Artist of the Year Changed Modern Design
How We Used the Artist of the Year Platform to Teach
The award gave us more than recognition — it gave us a reason to share everything we'd learned.
The award gave me more than validation.
It gave me a microphone.
I started getting on stage at Pondemonium.
I started sharing what I'd learned — not just about rock placement and waterfall design, but about profit margins, leadership, and longevity.
Now, I use my voice to teach.
I try to give back the same way others gave to me. I tell stories. I speak honestly. I show people that they can build great art and run a great business — if they're willing to do the work on both sides.
How Tristan Is Carrying the AOTY Legacy Forward
What Artist of the Year Meant Then — And What It Means Now
As for why I was chosen, I'm still pretty sure it was that single project — the Seiler build — that opened the door. Somebody saw that one job, looked into my portfolio, and realized we'd been quietly doing good work for a long time. That was enough to spark the conversation.
Now, more than a decade later, I realize I've failed at something.
I've failed at explaining to the world what it really means to win Artist of the Year.
People don't understand the work behind it.
And unfortunately, neither does my team.
Because the award came before most of them were here, it feels like my award — not ours.
And since you can't win it twice, there's no way for Tristan or the next generation at Modern Design to ever get it again. That's a hard truth. There are second-generation builders out there right now who are doing incredible work — and they'll never be eligible unless something changes.
That's the downside.
But the upside?
I still believe the Artist of the Year award means more than ever — because the competition is on a whole different level now.
Back when I won it, there were fewer builders. A small group of us were creating the style — not following it. We were figuring out what worked, what didn't, and we were putting ourselves out there to teach others.
Now, people start from a higher baseline.
They learn from video. They start at 50 and go to 100.
Some of that's good.
Some of it's scary — because it's possible today to watch a few YouTube videos, build a couple features, and sell a $300,000 project before you've ever laid a proper liner.
People are building castles without learning the foundation.
And that's where I believe the meaning of Artist of the Year has evolved.
It's not just about art anymore.
It's about integrity. Sustainability. Credibility. Longevity.
When someone wins Artist of the Year now, they're being put on a pedestal — not just as a builder, but as a representative of the entire pond-building industry.
If that person doesn't run a solid business…
If they aren't running ethically…
If they're not going to be here next year…
Then they don't belong on the stage.
I would never cast my vote for someone who builds pretty features but has no foundation under them — because this award is more than a title. It's a trust signal. And we owe it to every young builder in the crowd to get it right.
How Aquascape Selects Artist of the Year — Step by Step
Nomination by peers, a regional vote, then a final decision by past winners and Aquascape leadership — only one artist earns it each year.
Winning Artist of the Year isn't just about building beautiful water features anymore.
It's about who you are, how you lead, and how you're seen by your peers.
Let me walk you through how it works today — and what it really takes to earn it.
Step 1: Represent Your Region
Aquascape splits the world into regions — North America, Australia, Canada, Europe, etc.
Each year, Certified Aquascape Contractors (CACs) in those regions are asked to vote for someone in their region who represents the best of the industry.
To even be considered, you have to:
- Show up online (strong website, strong social media, strong visuals)
- Have a reputation for quality in your region
- Be respected by your peers
- Stand out in both artistry and execution
That's how you get nominated.
Step 2: Get Voted In By Your Peers
Once the nominations are in, CACs from your region vote.
From that vote, one finalist per region is selected. These are the best of the best — the regional champions.
But the process doesn't stop there.
Step 3: Face the Panel
Each of the regional finalists is evaluated by:
- All previous Artists of the Year
- Key leaders at Aquascape (Greg Wittstock, Ed Beaulieu, Brian Helfrich, and others)
Each person on that panel does their homework:
- They look at your company
- They study your work
- They look at your reputation
- They ask around
Then they each submit a vote — ranking their top three finalists.
Each vote carries points:
- First place = highest points
- Second and third = fewer points
The points are tallied. The finalist with the highest total wins.
One artist.
One winner.
Worldwide.
Every year.
Why Artist of the Year Still Matters — Even If Clients Don't Know It
To us, it's more than a credential — it's a reminder to build at the highest level, every time.
Not long ago, a client told me directly:
"We're hiring you because we want a Michelangelo."
And honestly… that's exactly what Artist of the Year means to someone who gets it.
How you do anything is how you do everything.
And when you hire us, you're not just getting a water feature. You're paying for an experience — one where every detail matters, and nothing is left to chance.
We care about everything:
- The journey we take you on as a client
- The transparency of the process
- The education we give you so you can make a smart decision
- The preparation before, during, and after the build
- The ongoing conversation around care, cost, and maintenance
We're not hiding anything. We're not winging it. We've done the work. We've lived in the trenches. We've chased the bar… then realized we were the ones setting it.
And now?
There is no bar.
There's just us — dreaming up amazing things and building them for people who deserve something more.
What Hasn't Changed Since 2013
We're still learning, still teaching, and still chasing that next level — just like we always have.
Everything that got us here is still alive in every job we do.
We're still students.
We're still teachers.
We still believe that we haven't arrived — and never will.
Because the second you think you're done learning, you're done growing.
And there's nothing we can't dream up and accomplish when we stay in that mindset.
Why This Story Matters — And What We Want You to Feel
We're not trying to impress — we're trying to connect. This is about purpose, passion, and building something that matters.
Hopeful.
We want you to read this and realize that we're just real people.
Not unreachable. Not arrogant. Not out of touch.
We just worked our asses off to develop a God-given talent. And we continue to do the work — every day — to honor that gift.
There are a lot of people who can build a good Pond, Fountain, or Waterfall.
Plenty who can build a great one.
But if you want something exceptional — something that's a true emotional, functional, artistic masterpiece — we think you owe it to yourself to look a little deeper. Ask more questions. Look at the details.
You'll see the difference.
What Sets Us Apart — Even Among Other AOTY Winners
It's the invisible details — the ones no one notices individually, but everyone feels as a whole — that set us apart.
It's the obsession with detail.
Even among the greats, we hear it:
"You guys waste so much time on little things that don't matter."
But the truth is that the tiny stuff is what creates the invisible greatness.
Many little things no one notices individually can create a "feeling" when experienced collectively!
We're not doing it for show.
We're not doing it to impress anyone else.
We do it because it brings us joy 😉
We love creating something that helps people connect —
With nature,
With each other,
And with themselves.
