From Ordinary to One-of-a-Kind: Alabama Fountain Makeover
Project Cost?
$27,500
On the side of Melissa and Scott’s home in Grant, Alabama, two prefabricated fountains had been installed. At first, they added movement and sound, but over time the limitations showed. The fountains were identical, side by side, their finishes fading under the Alabama sun. The basins were small, which meant frequent refilling, and the pumps struggled to keep up with leaves and debris.
Melissa and Scott began to realize something important: these fountains didn’t reflect the character of their home, and they didn’t fit the life they wanted in this space.
That’s when they made the decision to trade in ordinary for something truly unique. Instead of replacing one kit with another, they chose to go full-on custom — a fountainscape dreamed up and brought to life by the artists at Modern Design, with water flowing naturally through hand-drilled limestone boulders.
The transformation was striking. What had once been two identical pieces became a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Stronger, more permanent, designed for less maintenance and more enjoyment. The sound of falling water filled the space with energy, creating a healing and relaxing environment while connecting seamlessly into the rest of the landscape.
For Scott, this became his favorite part of the entire backyard renovation. The simplicity of stone and water, working together in a way that felt natural and effortless, turned a once-overlooked corner of the property into the highlight of his home.
Melissa and Scott didn’t just replace fountains. They created a feature that will bring them joy for years to come — timeless, personal, and uniquely theirs.
Diving Into The Details
Melissa and Scott’s fountainscape wasn’t just an upgrade — it was a complete transformation of two identical DIY fountain kits into a permanent, low-maintenance work of art. Built to deliver lasting performance and natural beauty, this custom feature showcases the precision and creativity behind every Modern Design Aquascaping build.
- Custom Build: Replaced two identical DIY faux-rock fountains with a core-drilled limestone fountainscape, engineered for longevity, natural water movement, and balanced flow.
• Natural Materials: Hand-selected limestone boulders chosen for scale, color, and texture to achieve a timeless, authentic look.
• Larger Reservoir: Increased water capacity reduced the need for refilling and supported higher water flow for stronger visual presence and sound.
• Aquatic Plant Integration: Added around the base to soften edges, enhance filtration, and create seasonal variation.
• Lighting: Installed to highlight the limestone texture and the movement of water after dark.
The finished fountainscape stands as a one-of-a-kind feature that merges engineering precision with organic design — a balance of stone, water, and light built to bring tranquility and character to the space.
