From Driveway Pool to Backyard Paradise
Project Cost?
John and Jane had a small water feature installed by their landscaper when they built their home years ago. Positioned by the driveway, the feature was a simple pool with recirculating water. While it added some charm to the space, it wasn’t designed for long-term functionality or low maintenance.
As the years went on, they realized it wasn’t serving their lifestyle. They loved the look and sound of water but wanted something that added more value to their daily lives.
Fast forward to their home addition—an outdoor living area complete with a kitchen, dining space, and cozy seating for watching University of Tennessee football games. John reached out to Modern Design to explore how they could rebuild the feature to complement their new space.
After thoughtful discussions, it became clear:
- A pond wasn’t the right fit for their busy lifestyle.
- The location next to the driveway wasn’t ideal—it was out of sight from the areas they spent most of their time.
Together with Modern Design’s expert team, a new plan emerged: a stunning Smoky Mountain-inspired pondless waterfall positioned right outside their new outdoor living area. It would be visible from their backyard oasis and multiple rooms inside their home.
In just a few days, Modern Design transformed their space. The gentle sound of cascading water now fills the air, creating a tranquil atmosphere for relaxing, entertaining, or watching the game. John and Jane’s new waterfall is more than a feature—it’s an experience that brings their family together.
Diving Into The Details
Creating Height & Flow:
Despite the backyard’s gentle slope, Modern Design’s artists crafted a vertical drop of over 3 feet, spread across multiple cascades and waterfalls. The stream stretches 15 feet, with water flowing seamlessly over carefully placed Tennessee boulders weighing up to half a ton.
Smart Features for Easy Living:
- A variable-speed pump with remote control allows John to adjust the waterfall’s volume for any occasion.
- Underwater lighting adds a magical glow at night, extending the feature’s enjoyment into the evening hours.
Attention to Detail:
- Construction used protective mats to preserve the lawn. By project completion, the backyard looked untouched—aside from the stunning new waterfall.
- Collaboration with a landscaping company ensured the terrestrial plantings tied the waterfall perfectly into its surroundings.
Efficient Transformation:
The entire waterfall was constructed in just a few days, delivering a seamless blend of beauty, function, and practicality. The result: a backyard oasis that not only met John’s expectations but exceeded them.
