Sheila and Ken had spent years enjoying the serene beauty of their koi pond. For Sheila, it was more than a water feature—it was her sanctuary, her daily retreat where she connected with nature and the fish she had come to love like family. Each fish had a name, and she would delight in hand-feeding them peas and prawns. The pond brought her a deep sense of joy, peace, and relaxation.

As they grew older, Sheila and Ken decided their sprawling home was more than they needed. Downsizing seemed like the logical next step, and when they listed their house, it sold within a day. Suddenly, everything was moving at lightning speed. Sheila was thrilled about her new home, but one thing weighed heavily on her mind: her koi needed a new pond, and there was no time to spare.

She found Modern Design Aquascaping Inc. during her search for help. From the very first conversation, Sheila knew she had found a team she could trust. Despite significant challenges—including tight backyard access and a sloped yard that required additional retention work—Modern Design Aquascaping Inc. rose to the occasion. By using extra topsoil and strategically placed boulders, they overcame the slope and created a stunning, functional pond.

Three short weeks later, Sheila’s dream pond was complete. It nestled perfectly against her new back porch, allowing her to dip her feet into the water and feed her beloved fish up close.

The deadline was met, the experience exceeded her expectations, and most importantly, Sheila and her koi were overjoyed. Modern Design Aquascaping Inc. turned a stressful situation into a happy new chapter, proving that dreams—even on a deadline—can come true.

Behind the Build: The Details of Sheila’s New Ecosystem Koi Pond:

Sheila’s new koi pond was more than a backyard addition; it was a carefully designed ecosystem built to ensure the health and happiness of her fish while delivering beauty and functionality for her enjoyment.

  • Size and Capacity: The pond holds approximately 2,300 gallons of water, offering ample space for Sheila’s beloved koi.
  • Boulder Placement: Boulders weighing up to 1,200 pounds were meticulously placed to create the structure and aesthetic of the pond.
  • Design for Interaction: Vertical edges were built along the house to enhance viewing from Sheila’s seating area. Flat interaction stones were added strategically, inviting Sheila to get up close and personal with her fish.
  • Aquatic Plant Integration: Minimal shelving allowed for a variety of aquatic plants, adding vibrancy and natural filtration.
  • Excavation and Depth: The pond required a 27-inch excavation to achieve a water depth of 24 inches, ensuring the safety and comfort of the koi.
  • Stream Addition: An 8-foot-long stream adds movement and visual appeal, mimicking a natural waterway.
  • Advanced Filtration System: The pond features an upgraded biological filter with a bottom drain for easy maintenance. This system is loaded with extra filter media for optimal water clarity and includes a flush feature for thorough cleaning. Check out our video for more details: How We Clean a BioFalls with a Bottom Drain.
  • Efficient Water Flow: A variable-speed pump with a flow rate of 4,000–8,000 GPH keeps the water clean, clear, and circulating effectively.
  • Overcoming the Slope: One of the biggest challenges was the backyard’s sloped terrain. To create a stable and level base for the pond, the team used additional topsoil and strategically placed boulders as retention, seamlessly integrating the pond into the natural landscape.

This project is a testament to what’s possible when expertise, creativity, and a commitment to customer happiness come together. Modern Design Aquascaping Inc. didn’t just build a pond; they created a haven where Sheila and her fish could continue their journey together.
